Astrophotography Experience: Capture the Night Sky
📅 Saturday, Oct 24, 2026 · 🕗 6:45-9:00pm · 📍 Ryan Observatory at Muddy Run
Ever wondered how people take those stunning photos of the Moon, nebulae, and galaxies? Here’s your chance to try it yourself. No equipment and no experience needed.
This is a relaxed, hands-on evening under the stars. You’ll work in a small group with a Seestar smart telescope, choose a target, and watch your image come together on screen as the telescope collects and stacks light in real time. While it works, we’ll all head into the observatory for advanced live demos covering the two main styles of astro imaging: lunar and planetary imaging, which uses high-speed video to capture the Moon and Saturn in sharp detail, and long-exposure deep-sky imaging, which gathers light over time to reveal faint nebulae and galaxies. At the end of the night, you’ll take home at least one image you made yourself.
What to expect
A friendly introduction to how astrophotography works
Hands-on time running a smart telescope from your phone
Two live observatory demos: lunar and planetary imaging (Moon and Saturn), and long-exposure deep-sky imaging
Basic data/image processing walkthrough
Your own images to take home
What to bring
Warm layers, since it gets cold after dark
A red flashlight, if you have one (please, no white lights on the field)
Your phone, with the free Seestar app installed
Who it’s for
Ages 13+. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Cost & registration: $10/person · Limited to 9 guests.
Clear sky event only. In the event of adverse weather, the event will be cancelled and refunded.
